Homeowners Policies Do Not Include Coverage for Flood Damage.

NOAA predicts rainer season for Great Lakes Region, with increased possibility of flooding. Make sure your possessions are protected from damage by flood.

The standard Homeowners policy does not include coverage for damage caused by flooding. There is coverage available for some hazards with endorsments like the Backup of Sewer and Sump Endorsement, but even with this enhancement, damage caused by flooding is not covered. The policy has a specific exclusion for water damage caused by flood.

In its latest predictions, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, includes a rainier and warmer season for the Great Lakes Region, which includes Northern Illinois. The prospect of flooding is greater than in the past several years.

The best way to protect yourself from a flood is through a policy underwritten through the National Flood Insurance Protection program. Policies are marketed through Independent Insurance Agents and several Insurance Carriers.

There is a 30 day waiting period before coverage can go into effect, so last minute purchases will not provide any protection from the damage caused by a flood. Even if your residence is not near a stream, river, or other body of water, a flash flood can quickly arise, and cause significant damage.

Talk to your community about the history of flooding in your area, and then talk to your insurance professional to find out how to protect yourself and your possessions.
