Plans Made to Honor Veterans

Events will be held throughout the month.

A number of events are planned throughout the month to honor veterans.

will hold its 10th annual Veterans Day Breakfast from 9 to 10 a.m. Put together by the third-grade teachers, the event will feature a musical salute to roughly 40 past and present members of the military. To prepare for the event, each student interviewed a veteran.

The College of Lake County will hold its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at noon in room C005 of the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. This year's keynote speaker will be Cmdr. Robert S. Sullivan, executive officer of Naval Station Great Lakes. The North Chicago Community High School Junior ROTC program will present the colors, and a brass quintet from Naval Station Great Lakes will perform.

Other people slated to speak at the ceremony include CLC Vice President Darl Drummond; Student Government Association President Blake Banovitz; CLC student and Illinois National Guard Staff Sgt. Blake Miles; and Ryan Frey, CLC coordinator of veteran and military personnel. Frey also served as a senior chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy from 1989 to 2009.

The is holding several events this month in honor of veterans.

  • The World War II Memorial: A Testament to Freedom film will be shown at 1 p.m. Nov. 10. Registration is required. Visit www.eapl.org or call 1-847-438-3433.
  • The library is in the midst of a letter-writing campaign with the Salute American Heroes organization. The campaign started Nov. 7 and will end Nov. 14. People can write letters and address them, unsealed, to "Dear Wounded Warrior" or "Dear American Hero." No postage is needed. Letters can be dropped into the collection box located at the library's information desk. For more information, call 1-847-438-3433.
  • On Nov. 19, the library, in partnership with Pillars of Honor Inc., will unveil an original scale model of the National World War II Memorial. "A Day of Honor" reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 19 will honor local veterans and their families at , 330 S. Old Rand Road. "A Day of Honor" will feature a color guard presentation, speakers, acknowledgement of each veteran in attendance and the unveiling of the model, which will be on permanent display at the Smithsonian Museum.   • On Nov. 20, Jeanine Hill-Soldner will share her work and stories from veterans. Hill-Soldner is an artist from Chicago and founder of the Portraits of American Veterans Project. Her portraits are displayed in the library through Nov. 30. Her presentation on Nov. 20 will be held from 2 to 3 p.m.
