A New Hospital Will Be Built in Lake County

Vista Health System plans to build a new hospital around its new freestanding emergency center in Lindenhurst.

Vista Health System announced today that it plans to build the first new hospital for Lake County in nearly 40 years to fill an urgent health care need in northwestern and north central Lake County. The hospital would be built on Vista’s Lindenhurst campus located on Grand Avenue at Deep Lake Road.

“The tremendous community response to our new freestanding emergency center in Lindenhurst shows there is a great need for this hospital,” said Barbara J. Martin, CEO of Vista Health System. “We plan to build this new hospital around the center, which is expected to treat 12,000 patients this year.”

Vista Health System submitted its Certificate of Need application for the Lindenhurst hospital to the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, which will vote on whether to approve Vista’s plans.

The 132-bed, five-story medical center will allow Vista to bring hospital beds significantly closer to residents who live in under-served areas of Lake County.  Vista Medical Center Lindenhurst will offer a convenient and modern facility with easier access to health services, including:

  • Level II Trauma Center
  • 12 ICU beds
  • 20 post-partum beds and a nursery
  • 100 medical/surgical beds
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Five operating rooms
  • Outpatient services

“The timing is right for this hospital,” Martin said. “Our patients need better access to health care, and our communities need jobs. The construction will add approximately 100 jobs, and as we are preparing to open the hospital we’ll have nearly 600 permanent jobs available.”

The $131 million, 188,000-square-foot hospital is projected to be complete in 2015. It will complement the Vista Ambulatory Care Center, the Vista Freestanding Emergency Center that opened in July 2011, and the Vista Medical Office Building that officially opens in late October. Services already available on the Lindenhurst campus include:

  • Therapy Services
  • Sleep Disorders Center
  • Lindenhurst Surgery Center LLC
  • Helipad
  • Diagnostics Lab with MRI and digital mammography
  • Physician offices

“We have received support for this hospital from emergency services personnel in the Lindenhurst area,” said Martin. “They know this hospital will save lives because it could cut an average of 20 minutes from their ambulance runs.”

The Lindenhurst area continues to grow. Its population is expected to go up by about 6 percent between 2010 and 2015. Most importantly, the population of citizens 65 and older, who are more likely to use inpatient hospital services, is expected to increase by almost 30 percent in that same time span.

Vista Medical Center Lindenhurst will be a satellite hospital of Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan. This will allow for efficient use of a wide range of administrative and support functions that will serve both hospitals.
