The first national celebration of Memorial Day took place on May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery, where both Confederate and Union soldiers were buried. The holiday was originally known as Decoration Day, because people placed flowers on the graves of their loved ones. The holiday was observed on May 30, until the '70s when it was switched to the last Monday of May.
