Stevenson Senior Sells Scrumptious Carrots, Other Produce
Kildeer resident owns Kirsten's Gardens.
Kildeer resident Kirsten Halverson, a 17-year-old senior at Stevenson High School, is the owner-operator of Kirsten’s Garden. A vendor at the Lake Zurich Farmers Market, Halverson grows her crops at the same Wauconda farm as Jim Mauck.
“We have a garden at home, and my dad’s in the food business,” said Halverson. “I was looking for a business enterprise to get involved in during the summer, so my dad and I did market research, and found that farmers markets are a great way to sell produce.”
Halverson concedes that she is not your typical teenager who is perhaps more concerned with having fun in the sun.
“I’m really involved in this whole process of growing my produce and then selling it. I’m doing everything myself.”
Last Friday, she was selling bunches of scrumptious-looking carrots that looked the way carrots once did — not all perfectly symmetrical, but irregularly shaped and deep orange.
