Lake Zurich Students Went to High School in Wauconda, Barrington

Answer to this week's Bringing Back the Past history question.

Yesterday's photo was a 1952 yearbook from Ela-Vernon High School. Back in those days, kids from Ela and Vernon townships went to the same high school. 

Before 1928, students from Lake Zurich didn't even have their own high school. They had to go to school in Barrington or Wauconda.The Ela Township High School opened its doors in 1928 for 35 students in the freshman class, according to historian Nancy Burgess.  The high school was located at 100 Church Street and is now

Vice President Ron Frank said some kids from Vernon Township traveled to Lake Zurich from as far east as nearly Lake Forest.

"They were so happy when they got their drivers license," he recalled. 

Ela-Vernon High School split into two districts in 1965 creating and Stevenson High School.
