Need Resources for an Internet Job Search?

I provide a list of online resources to help you land your next job.

What are the best Internet resources for job search?

That's a great question and I'll be glad to answer that but first let me say something really important. Ready? Statistically, less than 10% of people get jobs through the Internet.

When I hear of people spending most of their job search time on the computer, I get really concerned because they're not investing their time wisely.

More than 75% of people get their jobs through networking or what I like to call "building relationships deep and wide." Spend about 75% of your time with people and about 25% of your time on the computer.

The free websites I recommend here will help you be efficient online and free you up to network.

  • www.indeed.com – Using this site to search for jobs can reduce your online search time by 20% or more. Indeed.com is a search engine for jobs, allowing you to find jobs posted on thousands of company career sites and job boards. No more searching for jobs on multiple job boards. Indeed.com captures the majority of jobs for you. (www.simplyhired.com is a similar site that works well too.)
  • www.linkedin.com – LinkedIn is the #1 social networking website to build professional relationships "deep and wide" and will become indispensible in your job search. Introverts who dislike the thought of going to networking meetings will love it. Simply create a professional profile and make connections. You'll enjoy the online networking groups, job search feature, recruiters who hang out there, and research tools. For a tutorial, go to http://learn.linkedin.com/training.
  • www.job-hunt.org – Love this website! Job-hunt.org is a virtual library of job search resources, articles and news. "Jump to" the Illinois page from the main page and you'll find thousands of resources near Lake Zurich including networking and support groups, a link to IDES for unemployment benefit information, and much more.
  • www.online.onetcenter.org – Still wondering what you want to be when you grow up? Check out this site for massive information about hundreds of occupations. Research wages and employment trends, required skills and education, and much more. Go to the Skills Search page, select the skills you possess and voilà! get personalized career suggestions.

Hope these resources are of help to you.

If you've got a question for me to answer post it on the Lake Zurich Patch website or send them to me at AskCoachChristy@gmail.com. Of course, you'll have to subscribe, but subscriptions are free.

See you next week,
