Certain lots of white and yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines, plums and pluots have been recalled.

Wawona Packing Company of Cutler, Calif., has issued a voluntary recall on certain lots of white and yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines, plums and pluots packed between June 1 through July 12.

Costco, Trader Joe's and Walmart, which operates Walmart and Sam's Club stores, buys fruit from Wawona and has posted notices about the fruit recall on their websites, according to a Reuters article.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recall was initiated based on internal company testing. The company shut down the implicated packing lines, retrofitted equipment, sanitized the facility and retested. Subsequent daily test results have been negative.
