Lake Zurich Announces Adopt a Highway Opportunity

Village President Suzanne Branding encourages residents and groups to keep a highway clean; enrollment is open through August.

The Lake County Division of Transportation is now accepting applications for the Adopt-A-Highway Program, Lake Zurich Village President Suzanne Branding announced, at the Aug. 6 village board meeting.

According to a Division of Transportation news release, enrollment is open through the end of August. This program provides residents and businesses an opportunity to contribute towards a cleaner "greener" environment, one mile at a time.

For nearly 20 years, Adopt-A-Highway volunteers have removed litter from Lake County highways and bike paths. Year after year, this program continues to be a success thanks to the dedication of hard-working volunteers from various business, civic, not-for-profit, social and youth groups. During the Spring Enrollment period earlier this year, the program hit an all time high with 93 percent of available sections adopted.

How does it work?:
When your group or business adopts a highway, the Division of Transportation provides high-visibility safety vests, trash bags and safety information. The group is responsible for litter removal, twice a year, from both sides of the adopted county highway. This experience promotes teamwork, helps the environment, and provides a valuable public service. Groups then receive recognition for doing so with commemorative signs bearing the group's name placed at their adopted location.
