LZHS Offers Unique Courses This School Year

Lake Zurich High School students can chose from a variety of courses from culinary arts to astronomy.

Students at Lake Zurich High School don't have to wait for college to start getting a wide-reaching liberal arts education.

Whether you've got a student enrolling this fall or are just curious what the kids are up to these days, here's a look at a few of the unique opportunities at LZHS from its fall course listings:

Marketing in Sports & Entertainment

The one-semester class will emphasize marketing principles through exposure to professional sports teams, the entertainment business and high-tech companies. Students will have the opportunity to hear speakers in professional sports, entertainment, and technology industries.

Drama III-Performance Art

This course focuses on period styles, taking the actor through character development of different period playwrights from Samuel Beckett to William Shakespeare. Scene work, monologues and duets will continue to be the performance objective. This course will introduce the actor to various styles of acting through the various playwrights in history.

Culinary Arts I

Culinary Arts is designed for students interested in exploring careers in food service with opportunities to prepare food in a commercial setting. The students in this advanced class will perfect their cooking skills, create recipes and learn food presentation.

Adult Living

Adult Living is for juniors and seniors. The purpose of this course is to help prepare the student for life in the adult world, with emphasis on emotional, social, and practical aspects of living. Special areas of study include personal development, communication and building healthy relationships with family and friends throughout the life cycle. Project favorites include planning a fantasy wedding and vacation and having the option to care for a computerized baby.

Concert Choir-Honors

Concert Choir is an advanced mixed choral ensemble selected by audition. The Concert Choir will focus on further refining their vocal techniques as well as learning advanced sight singing, music theory, phrasing and diction in foreign languages. The choir will have the opportunity to go on an out-of-state performance tour every third year. Past tours have included Florida, New York, California and Ireland.

Astronomy

Astronomy is an introductory course that covers the constellations, planets, stellar evolution, galaxies, our sun, the moon, life in the universe, UFO’s, and cosmology. This course is recommended for those students who do not take physics, but desire to learn some fundamental concepts of physics in a course that does not require the advanced math skill of the physics course.
