Red Rose Children's Choir to Participate in Newtown Remembrance Concert

The concert will be broadcast Sunday on WFMT, Chicago's classical radio station.

The Red Rose Children's Choir of Lake County is one of several choirs that will participate in a special concert to remember the lives lost at .

The choir will participate in the Healing the Brokenhearted concert at 5 p.m. Jan. 13 at St. James Cathedral, 5 E. Huron St., Chicago. The concert will be recorded and then broadcast at 7 p.m. on 98.7 WFMT, Chicago's classical radio station, and on WFMT's website.

"It's a really big honor," said Amy Younts, executive director of the Red Rose Children's Choir.

The concert is set to feature the Anima Young Singers, Soul Children, Pro Music Youth Chorus, Chicago Children's Choir, the St. James Cathedral Choir and the William Ferris Chorale in addition to the Red Rose choir.

Younts said she was approached by a conductor of one of the other choirs about participating in the remembrance concert.

"When we were asked to do this we thought, this is perfect," said Younts. "The kids who are doing this are really excited about it."

The 48 middle- and high school-aged children from the Red Rose Children's Choir will sing a special requiem with the other children's choirs, along with soloists from the Lyric Opera. Younts said each choir will also sing their own selection. The Red Rose Children's Choir will sing "Psalm 8."

The 60-minute interfaith remembrance service will feature a minister from the cathedral, a Buddhist monk and a rabbi, Younts said.

"It's a real mixture of everyone from the Chicagoland area coming together to do this," she said.

The Red Rose Children's Choir, now in its 15th season, includes children from all over Lake County, and some come from as far away as Bristol, WI, and Arlington Heights, Younts said. The choir was founded in 1997, and the first season featured 60 children. Now, there are about 165 children in the program's four choirs. The Red Rose Children's Choir holds two major concerts a year and the older children tour every other summer. The group has been to places like Canada, China and Hawaii, Younts said.
