Visitors are invited to explore the many delicious ways to enjoy fall’s favorite fruit–from live music and entertainment to apple pies, apple cider donuts, caramel apple lattes, apple martinis, and more. Local restaurants and specialty shops will carry a wide range of apple-inspired treats, while local farmers will have baskets full of a variety of tree-ripened apples. Musical acts including folk, bluegrass, country, rock, and jazz, will entertain crowds at stages centered around Fountain Square, The Covered Bridge and Towner Green through the three-day weekend in downtown Long Grove. Admission is $5 for adults, Children 12 and under are free.

Dickens: 200 Years of Celebrity

Starts Saturday, Sept. 29, Lake County Discovery Museum, Rte. 176, west of Fairfield, Wauconda

Mixing classic artifacts and pop-culture references, the Lake County Discovery Museum’s newest original exhibition, Dickens: 200 Years of Celebrity, opening September 29, introduces Dickens as the first international celebrity of the modern age. Hundreds of objects and documents from the exclusive private collection of local Highland Park resident Michael A. Weinberg, together with a rare collection of first editions of his most famous works, tell the story of how Charles Dickens and his characters became enduring cultural icons. The exhibit runs through February 24, 2013.

Funds raised from the event will go to sponsor Foundation projects such as the Teacher Innovation Grants.  To date, the Foundation has awarded over $55,000 in grants to teachers.  The cost for the 5K is $30 and the Fun Run is $15.

National Public Lands Day,

Saturday, Sept. 29, 9-11 a.m., Citizens for Conservation Headquarters

Join the Citizens for Conservation during the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve public lands. All are welcome to join the restoration volunteers at Citizens for Conservation’s headquarters, 459 West Highway 22, Lake Barrington. Volunteers will collect seed of native plants that will be used in restoration projects in the Barrington area. RSVP to Citizens for Conservation at (847) 282-7283.
