Summertime = Kids Alone Time

Can my kids be alone this summer?

Q: The end of school is almost near and I'm trying to figure out what to do with my kids this summer while I'm working part-time.  I've checked into sitters and camps, but I'm wondering if they could just stay home alone?

A: Thanks for asking a question that seems to be on many working parents' minds right now. After doing research on the topic, it appears that there are no steadfast guidelines that I can offer you regarding any type of legal rule. My best suggestion is for you to call your local police department to double-check your local ordinance regarding age and time limitations on minor children being left alone.

In addition, you should ask yourself and your child some questions:

  1. Has he/she been able to handle brief periods of time being left alone well?
  2. Does he/she know who to go to and how to get in-touch with someone in case of an emergency?
  3. Can he/she make their own snacks and take phone messages?
  4. Will he/she know what to do if they are bored, afraid or feeling alone?
  5. Will he/she follow house rules and use the time alone wisely?
  6. How will he/she handle arguments with siblings if they are also left in their care?

Hopefully their answers would help you gauge whether they are emotionally ready for this responsibility. Another suggestion is that the local Red Cross periodically offers Babysitting and Home Alone Safety Classes. Check with your local libraries and park departments regarding when the next class will be offered. Good luck with your decision.
