Robertson House To Be On Historical Society House Walk

What do you know about the Robertson House?

The will host a historical house tour, dubbed “From Then Til Now,” on Aug. 20.

Over the next few weeks, we will take a brief look at the homes that will be featured on the tour.

This week’s feature is on the Robertson House. Archibald Robertson Major was born in the late 1700s while his parents were traveling to the United States from Scotland. He married a woman named Lydia in 1806 when he was 35 and she was just 18. Archibald and Lydia had eight children. Archibald died in 1826 at 55 and was preceded in death by his parents, wife and four of his children.

Archibald’s son, John, came to Deer Grove in 1837 and married Charlotte Sutherland. The couple had 10 children and lived on a 1,000-acre farm in Deer Grove. Then, they built a house, now known as the Robertson House, where they grew crops like corn and oats, and tended to sheep, cattle and horses.

John Robertson became a respected community member, being elected an associate justice of the county court and serving as road commissioner.

Tickets for the Ela Historical Society’s historical house tour are $12 in advance or $15 the day of the tour. Tickets can be purchased at the Ela Historical Society on Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and on the first Saturday of the month between 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
