Reading For Relief

Isaac Fox Elementary School students and staff raise funds for Japan.

At 9 a.m., Friday March 18, learning wasn't as usual at Isaac Fox Elementary School in Lake Zurich.

"It was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop" stated Sue Evans one of the front office secretaries.

Why was this?  From 9 a.m.-9:30 am the 600 students and staff members participated in Reading For Relief. It was a fundraiser where the kids brought in a minimum of $1 to participate in quiet reading time to raise awareness and contributions for the Red Cross Relief Fund for Japan.

As I looked around the school during that half-hour, everyone had stopped their usual morning activities and started reading.  I found kids tucked into reading nooks or reading quietly at their desks. Ms. Lyons' kindergarten class used their classroom Smartboard with a Scholastic program and they were read to as a class. Even the office staff turned off their phones and locked the doors for the half hour to participate.

After the final page had been turned, the group from Isaac Fox was able to raise more than $2,900 to be given to the Red Cross.  Well Done Isaac Fox!
