LZHS Student Supplies Candles for Light the Night for Newtown

Erin Leahy secured a donation of candles and is offering them to residents; all donations for candles will go to Newtown victims.

Lake Zurich High School junior Erin Leahy is giving away hundreds of candles that were donated by Midwest Muscle Cars in Lake Zurich. She is hoping the candles will be used for which will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 21, the one-week anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

Donations received for the candles will go to defray the costs of the victims funeral expenses and college tuition of the victims' siblings, according to Dana Leahy, Erin’s mom.

Leahy had the idea to ask her uncle, Matt Renz, for the donation of candles. Renz, owner of Midwest Muscle Cars in Lake Zurich, also owned a candle making business in the past.

Nick Juknelis, choir director at LZHS, is Leahy’s school sponsor for the project.

“This was all Erin . . . Erin saw an article on Patch about the mayor and luminaries. She was so moved by what she read that she wanted to get the high school students involved,” Juknelis said.

Erin is offering candles at the school and donations go to a United Way chapter in Connecticut that is helping the victims.

High school students can get candles at school tomorrow.

Candles can also be picked up at Midwest Muscle Cars, 330 E. Rte. 22, in Lake Zurich.
