Look for Harvest Moon after Sunset Tonight

Keep your eyes to the sky tonight as the Harvest Moon appears.

Written by Stephanie Price

The Harvest Moon is expected to make its appearance tonight, soon after sunset.

The near full moon will rise shortly after sunset, Wednesday, Sept. 18, and reach official full moon status at 6:13 a.m. Thursday about the time the sun rises, according to News Watch National Geographic.

The full moon that appears near the fall equinox was dubbed the Harvest Moon, mostly likely by farmers who appreciated the moon's extra light during crop harvest time, according to News Watch.

With binoculars, views can see the moon's dark patches, which are large areas of ancient lava plains believed to have been formed more than one billion years ago, New Watch stated.
