'Bringing Back the Past' Answer Revealed

Did you guess the correct answer to this week's "Bringing Back the Past" question?

This week's "Bringing Back the Past" subject was Maybelle Kohl.

Kohl was born Aug. 12, 1910 in Lake Zurich. Her father, Charles William Kohl, was the first village clerk in Lake Zurich after the village's 1896 incorporation. He also served as a village trustee for six years, from 1913-18.

During Maybelle Kohl's 89 years, she served as a Women's Army Corps captain during World War II. A 1944 newspaper clipping announced Kohl's commission. Her military uniform is on display at the , which is open on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Before Kohl died in 1999, she had earned her Doctorate degree in philosophy and served as a college professor.

Coral Lee Scranton, director of the Ela Historical Society, said Kohl lived with her parents for her entire life.
