South Lake County Regional Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Do you know what to do in an emergency? Can you help your family or neighbors?

The news has been full this fall with reports of natural disasters. Do you know what to do to protect yourself and your family in the event of a catastrophic disaster like a tornado?   If something hits our area, the streets will be impassible with fallen trees and debris.  FACT! Police and fire will not be able to get to you.  For the first few crucial hours you will be on your own.  Can you shut off the gas in your home? Can you splint a broken bone for someone in your family or for your neighbor?

In order to bridge this time gap and provide critical help, an organization exists.  Are you aware that there is a core group of your neighbors who volunteer and are trained to help you? Have you heard of CERT ( Community Emergency Response Team )?  Volunteers from all walks of life and the communities of Long Grove, Hawthorn Woods, Kildeer and Lake Zurich have formed the South Lake County Regional CERT.

CERT was first implemented in 1985 by the Los Angeles Fire Department. The Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987 underscored the need for training individuals in the community to respond to each other in the event of an area wide disaster.  CERT members are trained to help until more help arrives.
