Located on the western shore of Lake Michigan midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, Naval Station Great Lakes is now 100 years old and has trained nearly 4 million sailors.
The base's mission is training, but few people know that it functions much like a city. The base pulls its own water from Lake Michigan, produces steam for heating, and has its own fire and police departments.
