Stevenson Student Wins Scholarship for ‘Second Inaugural’ Essay
Aliya Baker was a finalist in a statewide contest run by the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago.
A Stevenson High School senior won a $250 U.S. savings bond scholarship for her version of President Barack Obama’s second inaugural speech.
Her essay was among nearly 60 submissions from a dozen Illinois high schools. The students’ essays showed the writers’ knowledge of current events and topical issues. They were written and judged before Obama delivered his second inaugural address.
Only three students received awards in the contest.
The winning entry was written by Glenbrook South High School freshman Elayna Mork, who discussed civil unrest in North Africa and the Middle East and the current financial crisis. She won a $500 savings bond.
Another finalist, Harry D. Jacobs High School junior Hari Manikandan, received a $250 savings bond.
