NIU Freshman Found Dead in Fraternity House
A 2012 Palatine High School graduate attending Northern Illinois University was pronounced dead Friday morning in his fraternity house.
David R. Bogenberger, 19, was found unresponsive, and pronounced dead at 10:45 a.m. Police say there were no suspicious circumstances around the death that point to foul play, and an autopsy is scheduled for today.
Naperville
Bond Denied for Mom Accused of Stabbing Children
Prosecutors said 40-year-old Elzbieta Plackowska told her 7-year-old son Justin and 5-year-old Olivia Dworakowski to get on their knees and pray before fatally stabbing both children nearly 100 times.
The two young children pleaded for their lives as the woman killed her son first and then Olivia, stabbing them and slashing their throats, before also stabbing two dogs to death inside a townhouse in the 800 block of Quin Court in Naperville on Tuesday night, prosecutors said.
Plackowska was charged Wednesday night with two counts of first-degree murder. She appeared in DuPage County Court on Thursday morning, where Judge John Kinsella ordered that she be held without bond. Her next court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 21.
Crystal Lake
A Crystal Lake man arrested less than two weeks ago for firearms violations has now been linked to the September armed robbery at CVS Pharmacy in Crystal Lake.
Eric S. Sorenson, 29, of 198 Lake Ct., was arrested by Crystal Lake Police on Wednesday, and charged with one count armed robbery, a Class X felony, and one count of theft over $500, a Class 3 felony, according to a press release issued by Police Chief David Linder.
Police said Sorenson was charged with the robbery, which occurred the evening of Sept. 2, at CVS Pharmacy, 1305 Randall Rd., Crystal Lake. Armed with a semi-automatic handgun, Sorenson passed the pharmacist a note demanding three bottles of Oxycodone, police said.
Wauconda
Firefighter Charged with Child Sexual Abuse
Donald Berthiaume, 41, of the 2500 Block of Fish Hook Way in Wauconda was arrested on Oct. 31, for two counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse.
The victim, who was under the age of 13 at the time of the offense, reported to Lakemoor Police Department that in 2005 Berthiaume had inappropriate sexual contact with her when she was a juvenile. Lakemoor Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division to investigate the incident.
Berthiaume is a 13 year veteran of the Wauconda Fire Department.
Des Plaines
'Elmer Fudd Bandit' Strikes Again
A serial bank robber who tried to rob a bank in Des Plaines has struck again, the FBI stated.
A TCF Bank branch located at 7342 W. Foster Ave. in Chicago was robbed Monday afternoon. The man is suspected of robbing several banks in the Chicago area in October and trying to rob the TCF Bank in Jewel Osco, 819 S. Elmhurst Road in Des Plaines on Oct. 14.
The robbery is similar to the Oct. 14 attempted robbery in Des Plaines. In that incident, "The man approached the shift supervisor at the TCF Bank, and said, “Give me all your money or I’ll blow your head off.” He then showed the bank worker a notepad, which stated, according to police, “Give me all your money.”
On all of these occasions, the robber has worn a plaid flannel shirt, and in his most recent robberies, he has also worn a ballcap, which has led agents to refer to him as the 'Elmer Fudd Bandit,' the FBI stated.

As a Christian, I am gravely concerned about a society in which our politicians are trying to relegate the practice of religion and religious activities to the four walls of a church, etc., or to our homes, under the false guise that a separation does exist between church and state.
A nation led by leaders who are not God-centered is doomed to failure, as has been seen in history time and again by nations who were led astray into the atheistic societies ruled by Socialism and Communism.
It is man's moral compass that demands of himself certain actions toward his fellow man. Religion provides a moral compass. With a moral compass man understands right from wrong which, in turn, keeps society from retreating into anarchy.
The accounts related are living proof that man's moral compass is no longer the norm, so that it is conscience-based.
As religion becomes more and more of an afterthought in the minds of our political leaders -- and yes, President Obama is American's most Biblically-hostile president ever -- man's compass, or his ability to distinguish between right and wrong, will fail, in keeping with a society that is no longer God-centered and in which a president can issue Executive orders that change standing laws that breach our Constitution.

I am not religious...my sister is not religious. Morality can come from other things as well. I don't need a crutch. I don't stab people, I don't look down on others. You can pretend that I am the only problem, but I'm far from it. People who practice have also committed crimes...hostile and heinous versions thereof.
If you want to preach love, that's fine. But don't call us out as being awful people out to get everyone. All that makes you look like is a bigot. Criminals and criminally insane are just that, be them Islamic, Christian, Satanist, or Atheist.

I have two issues with your comment.
One: As a *woman*, I am gravely concerned about a society and its members who use language that only include (arguably) one-half of its people. I find it difficult to identify with "man's moral compass." Your language is sexist and does not include all. Your post is so clouded with gender-based language and you seem hell-bent on only using language for men. I hate to tell you this, but you have been told your entire life that we need to center our words on men. Why say "mankind," when you can easily say "humankind"?
Two: if our society is to be "God-centered" in order to avoid the gross moral decay you seem to think inherent in a society with separation of church and state, please tell me around which God we shall be centering. *Your* definition of God may be completely different than mine or my neighbor or any other person walking the earth. I actually do not believe that I need the crutch of religion to tell me the difference between right and wrong; but, I am a level-headed, college-eduated, well-adjusted member of society. I may not believe in anything, but I certainly know that killing two children is appalling.
The fact that we have to scapegoat a free, democratic nation as the cause of this is ridiculous. There is only one person to blame for killing those children: the mentally-ill woman who actually did it. We need to help people access mental health services; not pray that they'll go away.

Is it? So does freedom of religion mean I'm supposed to live under some form of theocratic rule? Or does it mean you are allowed to worship as you see fit in your private life....as also am I? There is a reason we try to have a separate church and state. Being a melting pot country, we have all sorts of religions, including a lack thereof. I think most of these comments are a reflection of what shes trying to say. God did not make that sicko kill those children--the sicko did. However, pushing the govt pill --wait forcing -- it down our throats is only going to encourage those who never had any religious influence to say 'its ok to be wrong & do something that's not right.'

What factual proof do you have that President Obama has not worked against Christians?
Facts that I see are
1. Expanding abortions on his very first day in office.
2. Refusing to shutdown Planned Parenthood, even when Lila Rose videotaped them giving advice on how to give abortions to 14year old girls without parental consent.
3. Lying during the debate by saying that Planned Parenthood provides important preventative healthcare such as mammograms, when not a single Planned Parenthood facility has a single mammogram machine.

To John Robinson: Prayer is personal, government does not need to allocate time for talking to a Supreme being. One can pray at anytime and as often as one needs, without a state or federal government devoting time, even a moment, for this exercise. Creating governmental sponsored "time" for silent prayer would be tantamount for our government(s) to recognize and legalize religious observance since praying requires a God. The first phrase in our First Amendment forbids this: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. Conversely, congress cannot prohibit one from praying at any time or at any place. I am praying right now that Obama wins a second term so that government stays out of our thoughts and out of our bodies.

Your judgement is clouded by the superstitions you were raised on and continue to be guided by. No...not "everyone here thinks our society has a perfect moral compass". There is no perfect moral compass. How can you even conceive of a perfect moral compass in reference to the imperfect human psyche. Get real. BTW...the USA (common society) is one the most christian countries on this planet...and look at the mess. So much for the christian fallacy. The thing that bothers me most is that 99% of religious people can't accept others opinions. They are so brain washed into believing that their beliefs are the only possible way to live life. Get off your high horses! Your mind is like a parachute. It only functions when open....

When this article was written I think it was written to inform everyone about a terrible tragedy that happened to this unfortunate family. Prior to this I have heard of another case similar a few days before this happened in Naperville. So many bad things going on in our world, because of some people, even though I think given the right circumstances we are all capable of such violence no matter how well rounded and how well balanced we say we are...Perfect example is right here on The Patch. Look how everyone is attacking one another on-line. I personally think its a shame and disgrace of which even I am guilty, following up on what idiots say to my comments. WE MUST ASK OURSELVES THIS! ARE WE BETTER THAN THAT WOMAN THAT ATTACKED THOSE CHILDREN?. PUT US ALL IN PERSON IN A ROOM WITH WEAPONS SAYING THE SAME FOUL DISRESPECTING THINGS TO ONE ANOTHER, WHAT DO ALL THINK WILL HAPPEN? MY POINT EXACTLY.The Constitution guarantees all freedom of speech, but not to attack one another calling foul names. My mother have always told me growing up, WHO KNOWS BETTER DO BETTER.YOU ALL CAN KEEP ATTACKING EACH OTHER, I AM TURNING OFF THE PATCH FOR NOW ON THIS ONE.
