Matt Blanchard on Bears Practice Squad

Lake Zurich’s own in the news this week after being cut and then signed to Chicago Bears.

Catch up on the latest news about LZHS graduate Matt Blanchard. Blanchard was signed to the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in May. The quarterback performed well in pre-season games, but was cut prior to the final pre-season game. Of course, Jay Cutler and Jason Campbell made the Bears roster as quarterbacks. The Bears terminated the contract of Josh McCown as third quarterback on Friday. On Saturday, they signed Blanchard to the eight-man practice squad.

Here are some highlights in the news:

Carrying only two QB’s gave the Bears flexibility at any other position that can use an extra man for depth. If something unfortunate happens to either Cutler or Campbell, the Bears could elevate Matt Blanchard from the practice squad to the active roster, says RantSports.com

Blanchard was almost going to be a necessity, as he's their de facto third quarterback should the unthinkable happen to Jay Cutler or Jason Campbell, according to Windy City Gridiron.

From ChicagoBears.com: Although Blanchard is not on the 53-man roster, the undrafted rookie will hone his skills on the practice field and in meeting rooms alongside veterans Jay Cutler and Jason Campbell. "It's a great opportunity for me," Blanchard said. "It's something you want as a quarterback. You want to continue to build your way up and work your way up the depth chart any way you can. So as a rookie being in the shoes I am, especially going undrafted, I'm happy things are happening."

“I've been dreaming of being a Bear my entire life. This is an incredible feeling . . . I look forward to taking advantage of every day. This career is short-lived and you want to make the most of it,” Blanchard told the Chicago Sun-Times Inside the Bears reporter.

The Bears will face the Indianapolis Colts in their first regular season game, Sunday, Sept. 9, at Soldier Field. The Colts have another LZHS graduate on their team, Anthony Castonzo, a left tackle.
