Barnes & Noble Hacked: Credit Card Info Stolen

More than 60 locations across the country have been affected. The Deer Park location was among those that had credit card data stolen by hackers from card readers.

The Barnes & Noble store in Deer Park, 20600 N. Rand Road, was among 63 stores around the country where credit card data stored on PIN pads was hacked, according to the company.

Barnes & Noble released a list of stores where data was breached on Tuesday; other stores in Illinois include two in Chicago, one in Crystal Lake, one in Evanston, one in Deerfield and one in West Dundee.

The company inspected every PIN pad in the nearly 700 stores nationwide and discontinued use of all its PIN pads on Sept. 14,according to a press release from the bookseller. Barnes & Noble described the hacking as “a sophisticated criminal effort to steal credit card information, debit card information, and debit card PIN numbers from customers who swiped their cards through PIN pads when they made purchase.”

The federal government is also investigating the crime, according to Barnes & Noble.

According to Barnes & Noble, purchases on the company’s website, on NOOKs and NOOK mobile apps remain secure.

Customers who swiped their cards at any of the Barnes & Noble stores affected are encouraged to change the PIN numbers on their debit cards, review their accounts for unauthorized transactions and notify banks immediately if they find anything suspicious.

A full list of the 63 affected stores can be found on Barnes & Noble’s website.

Hey Patch - you need to correct your sub-title. It states that 60 locations in Chicagoland were affected - that's not correct. There were only a handful of Chicago locations affected - 63 countrywide.

Hi Patch - is there a timeframe where customers were vulnerable? i.e. how far back do we need to be concerned? Thanks!

Hi Sheri,
I just got an email back (on a Sunday!) from Barnes and Noble corporate communications. The representative stated all pin pads were shut down on Sept. 14 and there is no known time frame (at this time) until the matter is further investigated. Check this link http://palatine.patch.com/articles/additional-information-barnes-and-noble-hacker-breach for more information on how to safeguard your interests if you are concerned.
Best,
Melanie

Hi Sheri,
Sorry for the late response! I left a message for Barnes and Noble Media Relations and no one got back to me...I was unable to find the information anywhere else. I will try again when the business day starts Monday.
