Baby You Can Drive My Car, Beep Beep, Yeah!

We all remember our first car. What did you drive?

Your first car—whether you loved it or hated it, you definitely remember it.

Depending upon where you stood, my first car was beautiful. A little rusty, the paint was dull and it had kind of a old dusty smell coming from inside, but it was beautiful.

My first car: a light blue 1965 Ford Thunderbird with a 290 engine, four-barrel carburator, sequential turn signals and a steering wheel that moved to the side so you could get in and out easier. It didn't run at first, but that's what made it even better.

I spent over a year working on that car with my dad, step-dad and especially one of my best friends from high school. We changed the brakes, the exhaust system, water pump and anything else we could think of to get that thing to run. And, eventually, it did.

We still talk about that car!

So we're Just Askin': What was your first car? Was it a beaten down thing you hated or did you love it just because it was yours? Let us know in the comment section below!

1968 Fiat Spider, carried a toolkit everywhere as the idle speed would have to be adjusted every half hour or so! Farthest i ventured was N. Barr. to downtown Chicago. In order to drive to school in Des Moines, my mom made me get a better car and i upgraded to a 1972 Gremlin!

1979 Pontiac Trans-Am. The black one with the gold fire chicken and T-Tops like Burt Reynolds drove in "Smokey and the Bandit". Fast, fun, crazy times those were! Loved that car but spent a fair amount of time/money keeping it going. Drove it all through college. When I graduated college my folks helped me buy a new car to replace "the ol' beater" so I could go on job interviews and look "presentable". It's not like I was taking the HR person out for a cruise on my interview! My parents had the best of intentions and I thank them every day for it. Still, I miss that car ...

You had the Bandit car? That's just awesome. Little REO or Boston jamming on the stereo? Very nice!

A red '64 Corvair convertible, white top! Top down, listening to Aliotta, Haynes & Jeremiah on the AM radio,
"Runnin' south on Lake Shore Drive, Headin' into town.
Just slippin' on by on LSD, Friday night trouble bound."
There was nothing like it! :-) :-) :-)

I bought a 1971 Chevy Impala from a friend of my dad's just before I graduated from college. It lasted a year. Stalled a lot in intersections due to a faulty carburetor. That was fun. Then I bought a Chrysler Horizon.

My first car was a '68 Ford Mustang. It was a V8 automatic with the shift on the floor and bucket seats. It would really get up and go when you pushed it. I am so sorry that I got rid of that car even though it was rusting. Should have fixed it up and kept it. I won't make that same mistake with my '87 Monte Carlo SS. That one is a keeper.

OMG! Talk about parallel planets! Mine was a red '68 Firebird, white leather bucket seats. Mine was automatic, with a speedometer that went up to160. Can't say the fastest I ever took it--my teen-aged daughter could be reading this! ALL the guys wanted to drive my car. I'd tell 'em they could ride along, but NOBODY drove that car but ME! I was an idiot to let go of that car; I've been kicking myself ever since! Now eBay emails me every time one gets posted, but with a daughter driving, who can afford to buy something I'm going to keep covered & in the garage?

I don't remember the year but it was a mint green Chevy Chevette. I bought it myself for $1,000 when I was 17. It lasted until I went to college. It was like a Fred Flintstone car since it had a rusted hole on the passenger side. You could put your feet into the hole. My dad put a huge piece of metal to cover the hole up. Loved that car.

I almost got a reliable Toyota Tercel but it was sold. So I purchased a 1972 Datsun. First week it needed a major repair. On the other hand, it took two long trips from DC to Colorado with an AM radio and then off to Canada the next year with an FM Converter. I was just in the car for the tunes. Basically a piece of junk.

A 1991 Chevy Beretta, cassette player, no CDs. It was a wonderful car, and I was so sad when the time came to upgrade!

I, too, had a Chevy Beretta. Red. It was awesome! My parents got it for me as a high school graduation gift. The worst part was when the air conditioning stopped working (and it would have cost too much to fix). That made for some really interesting road trips. But I loved that car!

A 1960 Red and White Rambler Station Wagon. It had a weird Vaccum powered wiper system; and when it went bad, I had to tie a string to the Wiper blade to make it work. LOL, What memories.

I bought my first car in the Army when I was stationed at Fort Lee. It was a powder-blue 1972 Plymouth Satellite with a white-vinyl top, a real junker. The guys in my platoon called it "The Music Mother," after a Virginia radio station. It was a muscle car. It had a big eight-cylinder engine. One time the radiator sprang a leak. I replaced it easy. It was held in place with four bolts and a couple hose connections. I couldn't tell you where the radiator is in my Volvo.

I had my parents hand me down '85 Subaru GL sedan. Holes in the floor board and muffler, but a loud enough stereo to cover it all up.

@Ana: was it a 351 V-8, and if so was it a Windsor or a Cleveland engine?

LilSuz...I was a 17 year old girl...all I can tell you is it was blue, heavy as a tank and my heart beat fast every time I drove it. My husband and I are about to celebrate our 25th wedding anniv., have decided to buy a '66 Chevelle or Impalla convertible as a gift to each other. Time for another fun car...:)

First car was a 1959 Plymouth Savoy 2 door sedan.
It was black and had chrome reverse rims all around.
The engine was a 361 with an Isky 3/4 solid lifter cam, four barrel carburetor, dual points and dual exhaust with glass packs.
A 4:56 posi in the back was held in place with traction masters.
The four speed was courtesy of Jack Sharkey who raced Plymouths and Dodges back then.
Even back then it would pull the front tires a bit and I never lost to a vette.

My Dad had this posted originally in Florida but they reside with us now here in Illinois "'57 Oldsmobile (appeared in St Petersberg Times Jan 26, 2010 with photos) The very first car I owned was a 1957 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 hardtop that I bought right off the showroom floor shortly after I was discharged from the Army when I was 20 years old. At the time, I lived at home with my parents in a residential area near downtown Buffalo, N.Y. Needless to say it was an eyestopper with the ladies. When I had only 80 miles on the car, I met my present wife of 49 years now, on a blind date. She is still with me and the car gave us many happy memories, and I am sorry but the car is not."

first car 1965 Cadillac fleetwood. I was with my grandmother when she bought it new. I bought it from my father in 1971 while in college., I still have it today and it will be a feature car at the Lake Forest Antique Auto show July 22 in in Lake Forest at Deerpath school grounds. It has been used for many wedding over the years. It is all white with Black interior. In college I was asked to drive all the visiting guests, speakers, etc and got to meet a number very interesting people and a dinner out on the college with them. The car is bigger than my suburban and time less in style.

A 1967 Mustang convertible. Paid $1,100 for it in 1969. Quirky little thing, the front driver's seat was held in place with a brick. Thankfully I was the same height as the previous owner so there was no issue with trying to move the seat! And then in rainy weather, if you took your foot off the gas it would stall out. I learned how to drive with two feet and to shift into neutral when approaching a red light or stop sign. And, yes, it was an automatic! I would kill to have that car back again.

Sad that the kids today never even know that cars had three pedals, and you had to shift the gears because the car didn't do it for you :)
